Methodology

How GDPIndex is built

Data sources

Every numeric value on this site is sourced from one of the institutions below. We do not generate, model, or estimate values internally; we report what the source publishes.

  • World Bank — World Development Indicators: GDP (current USD), GDP per capita, GDP growth, GDP at PPP, GDP deflator. Annual frequency, 1960 onward where available.
  • International Monetary Fund — World Economic Outlook: cross-validation of current-year GDP figures and short-horizon projections.
  • Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED): time-series cross-checks for advanced economies.
  • Bank for International Settlements (BIS): credit-to-GDP ratios and debt-service data.
  • European Central Bank (ECB): euro-area aggregates and member-state harmonised series.

Currency and units

GDP totals are quoted in current US dollars unless explicitly labelled PPP. Per-capita figures use the same currency convention. Growth rates are real (inflation-adjusted) where the underlying source publishes a deflator.

Editorial method

Each country page is structured around the country-specific economic questions that recur in the literature — middle-income trap, demographic dividend, resource concentration, currency volatility, debt sustainability. Section headings are not boilerplate; they reflect the structural story of that particular economy.

Analytical narrative is drafted with the assistance of large language models that have been instructed to remain neutral, fact-led, and to anchor every paragraph in at least two numerical references from the cited series. Drafts are reviewed against the underlying data before publication.

Update cadence

The underlying database is refreshed daily from the source feeds. Editorial narrative is regenerated when an inflection year is observed in the data or when a significant policy event materially changes the structural picture.

Corrections

If you find a factual error, please write to [email protected]. We correct in place and note the change in the page metadata.
