World Ranking · Data for Every Country
Countries by GDP per Capita
Which countries have the highest GDP per capita in 2024?
Monaco leads the 2024 ranking with a GDP per capita of $288,001.43, followed by Liechtenstein at $210,704.45. These two microstates exceed the median of $8,132.32 by a factor of 35.4 for Monaco and 25.9 for Liechtenstein. The table below lists 200 countries and territories by nominal GDP per capita, using data for the reference year 2024. Nominal GDP per capita divides a country's total economic output by its population, without adjusting for price differences between countries. The top of the ranking is dominated by small financial centres, oil-rich states, and a few advanced economies. The United States ranks 10th at $85,339.42, while the bottom five countries all fall below $600. The full table follows, with figures for GDP per capita, GDP per capita in purchasing power parity, and total nominal GDP.
What is GDP per capita (nominal)?
GDP per capita is a country's GDP divided by its midyear population. It is the most common shorthand for average income or output per person.
How it is measured. Nominal GDP in current US dollars divided by midyear population. Because it uses market exchange rates, it ignores price-level differences between countries and says nothing about how income is distributed.
How to read it. Use it to compare average economic output per person. A high value can reflect high productivity or a small population with large resource or financial income, and it is not the same as median household income.

Top of the ranking
Top of the ranking
The highest GDP per capita values are concentrated in a small group of economies, with Monaco and Liechtenstein far ahead of the rest. Monaco ranks 1st at USD 288,001.43 per capita, a figure 35.4 times the median of USD 8,132.32 across the 200 countries listed. Liechtenstein ranks 2nd at USD 210,704.45, or 73.2 per cent of Monaco's level. Both economies are small: Monaco records a total nominal GDP of USD 11.1 billion and Liechtenstein USD 8.5 billion.
Bermuda ranks 3rd at USD 142,855.37 per capita, followed by Luxembourg in 4th at USD 138,269.45. The gap between the two is USD 4,585.92, or 3.2 per cent of Bermuda's value. Luxembourg's total nominal GDP of USD 93.3 billion is more than ten times Bermuda's USD 9.2 billion, so its per capita position rests on a larger absolute output spread over a population of roughly 0.67 million. Ireland ranks 5th at USD 112,625.67, the highest value in the group with a GDP above USD 500 billion.
Switzerland ranks 6th at USD 104,339.68 and Singapore 7th at USD 90,674.06. Switzerland's nominal GDP of USD 937.4 billion is the largest among the top seven, while Singapore's USD 547.4 billion is the second largest. Norway ranks 8th at USD 86,686.26, Iceland 9th at USD 86,352.19 and the United States 10th at USD 85,339.42. The spread from Norway to the United States is USD 1,346.84, or 1.6 per cent of Norway's value.
Three features distinguish the top ten:
- Six of the ten are European states or territories: Monaco, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland and Norway.
- Four record total nominal GDP below USD 100 billion: Monaco (USD 11.1 billion), Liechtenstein (USD 8.5 billion), Bermuda (USD 9.2 billion) and Iceland (USD 33.3 billion).
- Purchasing power parity values diverge from nominal ones. Singapore records USD 150,798.66 at PPP against USD 90,674.06 nominal, while Switzerland records USD 95,826.55 at PPP against USD 104,339.68 nominal.
Concentration and spread
Concentration and spread
The 2024 distribution spans 200 countries, from Monaco at USD 288,001.43 per capita to Burundi at USD 281.51. The median stands at USD 8,132.32. Monaco's figure is 35.4 times that median, so the top of the ranking sits far above the midpoint of the sample. The gap between rank 1 and rank 200 is roughly 1,023-fold, which places the spread of the series well beyond that of most economic indicators.
Mass at the top is thin. Only four economies record GDP per capita above USD 138,000: Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bermuda and Luxembourg. A further six sit between USD 85,000 and USD 113,000, comprising Ireland, Switzerland, Singapore, Norway, Iceland and the United States. The top 15 therefore holds 15 of 200 entries, or 7.5 per cent of the sample, while the remaining 185 economies fall below the USD 74,119.66 recorded for the Faroe Islands at rank 11.
Scale effects within the top group
Population size separates otherwise similar per capita readings. Luxembourg records USD 138,269.45 per capita on a total GDP of USD 93.3 billion, while the United States records USD 85,339.42 on USD 29.02 trillion. Ireland posts USD 112,625.67 per capita against USD 609.1 billion of output. The Netherlands, at rank 15, combines USD 67,605.33 per capita with USD 1.21 trillion of GDP. Small jurisdictions can reach high per capita values on modest aggregate output, which limits direct comparison across the group.
The lower tail
Below the median, values decline gradually and then compress. Burundi records USD 281.51 per capita, South Sudan USD 300.86, Afghanistan USD 416.85, Yemen USD 470.66 and Malawi USD 513.53. All five sit under USD 515, and none exceeds 0.2 per cent of Monaco's figure. The distance from the median of USD 8,132.32 to Burundi is roughly 29-fold. The distribution is therefore skewed at both ends: a short, dense cluster of high values and a long, low tail.
- Highest: Monaco, USD 288,001.43 per capita.
- Median: USD 8,132.32 across 200 countries.

Caveats and alternative measures
Caveats and alternative measures
Nominal GDP per capita converts output at market exchange rates and does not adjust for domestic price levels. The gap between the two measures is visible across the brief: Bermuda records 142,855.37 nominal and 124,252.84 PPP, while Singapore records 90,674.06 nominal against 150,798.66 PPP. The same economy can therefore appear richer or poorer depending on the conversion applied. Across the 200 countries listed, the median nominal value is 8,132.32, and the top-ranked economy is 35.4 times that median.
Price levels and purchasing power
Purchasing power parity restates incomes in a common basket of goods. Qatar shows 73,841.51 nominal and 121,331.29 PPP, a difference of 47,489.78. Macao SAR, China shows 72,455.85 nominal and 127,585.55 PPP, a difference of 55,129.70. Both sit outside the top ten on the nominal measure but rank higher once price levels are removed. Conversely, Switzerland records 104,339.68 nominal and 95,826.55 PPP, so its nominal figure exceeds its PPP figure by 8,513.13.
Inequality and non-market activity
Per capita values divide aggregate output by population and reveal nothing about distribution. A country with high average income may have wide dispersion around that average. Unpaid household work, subsistence production and informal activity are excluded from the nominal measure. Burundi records 281.51 nominal and 1,073.91 PPP, a ratio of roughly 3.8, indicating that market exchange rates understate local purchasing capacity at low income levels. South Sudan records 300.86 nominal and 770.52 PPP.
Coverage and aggregation limits
Small jurisdictions with few residents can post extreme per capita figures. Monaco records 288,001.43 nominal on a total GDP of 11.1 billion USD, and Liechtenstein records 210,704.45 on 8.5 billion USD. The United States records 85,339.42 nominal on 29.02 trillion USD. Rankings also depend on whether territories such as Bermuda and the Faroe Islands are listed separately. The brief covers 200 economies, so any comparison drawn from the top 15 or bottom 5 reflects a partial view of the full distribution.
