What is GDP per capita (PPP)?

GDP per capita at PPP is GDP converted to international dollars at purchasing power parity and divided by midyear population.

How it is measured. It corrects nominal GDP per capita for price-level differences, so a dollar of income buys comparable amounts of goods and services across countries.

How to read it. The gap between nominal and PPP per capita is large for low-price countries and small for high-price ones. PPP is usually the better guide to day-to-day living standards.

Top of the ranking

Top of the ranking

The top 15 economies by GDP per capita at PPP span a range of 114,134.56 international dollars, from Liechtenstein at 195,976.74 to Denmark at 81,842.18. Liechtenstein leads the group and exceeds the second-placed economy, Luxembourg at 152,964.07, by 43,012.67. The ratio between the highest and lowest values in this group is 2.39. The median across all 197 economies in the dataset is 19,936.93, so the top-ranked economy sits 9.8 times above that median.

Composition of the top five

Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Singapore, Ireland and Macao SAR, China occupy ranks one to five. Singapore records 150,798.66 at PPP against 90,674.06 in nominal terms, a gap of 60,124.60. Ireland shows 133,712.28 at PPP and 112,625.67 nominal, a difference of 21,086.61. Macao SAR, China posts 127,585.55 at PPP and 72,455.85 nominal, a spread of 55,129.70. For Luxembourg the two measures are closer, at 152,964.07 and 138,269.45 respectively.

Ranks six to fifteen

Bermuda ranks sixth at 124,252.84 at PPP, with a nominal value of 142,855.37, the only case in the top 15 where the nominal figure exceeds the PPP figure by more than 18,000. Qatar follows at 121,331.29, then Norway at 102,885.04 and Switzerland at 95,826.55. Brunei Darussalam records 90,658.05 at PPP against 33,550.54 nominal, a ratio of 2.70. Guyana, ranked fourteenth at 81,879.70, shows the widest relative divergence in the group, with a nominal value of 30,318.75.

Range within the group

  • Highest: Liechtenstein, 195,976.74
  • Lowest: Denmark, 81,842.18
  • Absolute gap: 114,134.56
  • Ratio: 2.39

Denmark, the Netherlands at 83,764.02, the Faroe Islands at 81,908.78 and Guyana at 81,879.70 fall within 1,884.32 of one another, so the lower boundary of the top 15 is tightly clustered. The United States, ranked eleventh, records 85,977.35 at PPP and 85,339.42 nominal, a difference of 637.93, the smallest divergence between the two measures anywhere in the top 15.

Concentration and spread

Concentration and spread

The 2024 distribution of GDP per capita at PPP spans 197 economies. The highest value, Liechtenstein at 195,976.74 international dollars, exceeds the lowest, South Sudan at 770.52, by a factor of approximately 254. The median across all 197 economies is 19,936.93 international dollars. The top value alone is 9.8 times the median, confirming that the upper tail sits far above the central observation.

The top five positions are held by Liechtenstein (195,976.74), Luxembourg (152,964.07), Singapore (150,798.66), Ireland (133,712.28) and Macao SAR, China (127,585.55). Each exceeds the median by a factor above 6.4. The gap between rank 1 and rank 5 is 68,391.19 international dollars, a range larger than the median itself. Concentration at the apex is therefore not a single outlier but a cluster of five economies separated from the rest by a wide margin.

At the lower end, South Sudan (770.52), Burundi (1,073.91), the Central African Republic (1,302.73), Mozambique (1,701.07) and Yemen (1,707.54) occupy ranks 197 to 193. The interval between rank 197 and rank 193 is 937.02 international dollars. For comparison, the interval between rank 5 and rank 1 is 68,391.19. Spread is asymmetric: increments are small at the bottom and large at the top.

Rank 15, Denmark at 81,842.18, sits 4.1 times above the median. The distance from the median to rank 15 is 61,905.25 international dollars, while the distance from the median to the bottom five ranges from 18,229.39 down to 19,166.41. Roughly half of the 197 economies fall below 19,936.93. The median therefore divides the sample into a lower half clustered within a narrow band and an upper half extending across a far wider range.

  • Highest: Liechtenstein, 195,976.74
  • Lowest: South Sudan, 770.52
  • Median: 19,936.93
  • Top value as multiple of median: 9.8
  • Top value as multiple of lowest: approximately 254
  • Economies covered: 197

Caveats and alternative measure

Caveats and alternative measure

GDP per capita at PPP adjusts for price-level differences across 197 economies, but it excludes unpaid household work, informal output and natural-resource depletion. The median value across the dataset is intl $19,936.93, while Liechtenstein leads at intl $195,976.74, a ratio of 9.8 to the median. That spread reflects both genuine output differences and the limits of a single aggregate. PPP conversion factors also rest on price surveys that lag current exchange rates, so rankings can shift when relative prices move faster than the underlying survey data.

Nominal divergence

Nominal GDP per capita diverges sharply from the PPP measure. Brunei Darussalam records intl $90,658.05 at PPP against USD 33,550.54 nominal, a gap of roughly 2.7 times. Guyana shows intl $81,879.70 at PPP against USD 30,318.75 nominal. Conversely, Bermuda records USD 142,855.37 nominal against intl $124,252.84 at PPP, so its nominal figure exceeds its PPP figure. These reversals show that PPP and nominal rankings are not interchangeable, and neither captures distribution within a country.

Ranking effects

  • Switzerland: intl $95,826.55 at PPP, USD 104,339.68 nominal.
  • United States: intl $85,977.35 at PPP, USD 85,339.42 nominal.
  • Singapore: intl $150,798.66 at PPP, USD 90,674.06 nominal.
  • South Sudan: intl $770.52 at PPP, USD 300.86 nominal.

At the lower end, South Sudan records intl $770.52 at PPP and USD 300.86 nominal, while Burundi records intl $1,073.91 at PPP and USD 281.51 nominal. The nominal ordering of these two economies differs from the PPP ordering, since Burundi's nominal figure sits below South Sudan's despite a higher PPP value. Yemen records intl $1,707.54 at PPP and USD 470.66 nominal. Such gaps indicate that exchange-rate movements, commodity prices and survey timing all influence where an economy appears in either table.
