What is the IMF World Economic Outlook?

The World Economic Outlook (WEO) is the International Monetary Fund's flagship forecast report, published twice a year, in April and October. It gives IMF staff projections for growth, inflation, debt and other indicators for almost every country.

How it is measured. Figures for recent years are staff estimates and later years are projections that assume current policies. Each edition revises the previous one, and the IMF flags large uncertainty around its baseline. Nominal GDP in US dollars is converted at projected exchange rates.

How to read it. Treat forecasts as a central scenario, not a prediction. Compare editions to see how expectations change; rankings for 2030 are sensitive to exchange rate and growth assumptions, especially for fast-growing emerging economies.

Top of the ranking: Guyana and Kyrgyzstan

Top of the ranking: Guyana and Kyrgyzstan

Guyana holds rank 1 with 2026 real GDP growth of 22.3 per cent, more than double the 9.0 per cent recorded for Kyrgyzstan at rank 2. The gap between the two leaders is 13.3 percentage points, and the gap from Kyrgyzstan to Vietnam at rank 3, on 8.4 per cent, is just 0.6 points. Guyana's 2026 output is $40 billion, against $27 billion for Kyrgyzstan, so the fastest growth in the table is also the smaller of the two economies.

Guyana's expansion is not a single-year event. Growth was 19.3 per cent in 2025, is forecast at 22.3 per cent in 2026, 16.8 per cent in 2027 and 9.2 per cent in 2028. That four-year sequence implies output roughly 1.9 times its 2025 level by 2028 on the brief's figures. Kyrgyzstan's path is flatter: 11.1 per cent in 2025, 9.0 per cent in 2026, 7.0 per cent in 2027 and 7.5 per cent in 2028, a profile that converges towards the 3.1 per cent world growth rate for 2026.

  • Guyana: 2026 growth 22.3 per cent; 2026 GDP $40 billion.
  • Kyrgyzstan: 2026 growth 9.0 per cent; 2026 GDP $27 billion.
  • Gap to rank 3 (Vietnam, 8.4 per cent): 0.6 percentage points.
  • World growth, 2026 to 2028: 3.1, 3.4 and 3.3 per cent.

Both economies sit far above the world average of 3.1 per cent for 2026 and the 3.4 per cent forecast for 2027. The distinction between them is scale: Guyana's 2026 GDP of $40 billion is 1.5 times Kyrgyzstan's $27 billion, yet Guyana's growth rate is 2.5 times higher. Neither appears in the bottom five, where 2026 growth runs from 1.5 per cent for the Netherlands at rank 100 to 1.7 per cent for Azerbaijan at rank 96.

Spread and regional patterns

Spread and regional patterns

The 2026 growth range across the 100 listed economies spans 20.8 percentage points, from Guyana at 22.3 per cent to the Netherlands at 1.5 per cent. The world aggregate sits at 3.1 per cent for 2026, rising to 3.4 per cent in 2027 and easing to 3.3 per cent in 2028. World inflation for 2026 is put at 4.7 per cent. Only a minority of the listed economies exceed the world growth rate in 2026.

African and Asian economies hold 13 of the top 15 ranks. Africa contributes seven entries: Guinea, Sudan, Benin, Niger, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire and Tanzania. Asia contributes six: Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Georgia and India. Mongolia, ranked 12th, brings the Asian count to seven when Central Asia and East Asia are grouped. The two remaining top-15 positions are Guyana, ranked 1st, and Mongolia, ranked 12th. No European or Western Hemisphere economy other than Guyana appears in the top 15.

Scale varies widely within the leaders. India, ranked 10th, carries 2026 GDP of $4.1 trillion against 7 per cent growth. Vietnam, ranked 3rd, records $542 billion and 8.4 per cent. Guyana, ranked 1st, records $40 billion and 22.3 per cent. Kyrgyzstan, ranked 2nd, records $27 billion and 9 per cent. Sudan, ranked 8th, records $31 billion and 7 per cent after zero growth in 2025.

The bottom five cluster near or below 2 per cent for 2026:

  • Netherlands, ranked 100th: 1.5 per cent growth, $1.4 trillion GDP.
  • Moldova, ranked 99th: 1.5 per cent growth, $22 billion GDP.
  • Mexico, ranked 98th: 1.5 per cent growth, $2.2 trillion GDP.
  • Finland, ranked 97th: 1.7 per cent growth, $339 billion GDP.
  • Azerbaijan, ranked 96th: 1.7 per cent growth, $89 billion GDP.

Three of the bottom five post 1.5 per cent for 2026, and none exceeds 1.7 per cent. Mexico's 2026 figure of 1.5 per cent follows 0.5 per cent in 2025, the weakest 2025 reading among the bottom five. The Netherlands combines the lowest 2026 growth in the set with the largest economy in the bottom five at $1.4 trillion.

Caveats: what the ranking hides

Caveats: what the ranking hides

Ranking by headline growth places Guyana first at 22.3 per cent for 2026, yet its economy is $40 billion, the second smallest in the top fifteen. Vietnam sits third at 8.4 per cent on a base of $542 billion, roughly thirteen times Guyana's output. A percentage point of growth in Vietnam adds more absolute output than the whole of Guyana's expansion. The ordering by rate therefore says little about where global GDP is actually being generated.

Weighting by size reverses the picture. India ranks tenth at 7.0 per cent, but its 2026 economy is $4.1 trillion, larger than the other fourteen top-ranked economies combined. India's growth contributes several hundred billion dollars in a single year, against roughly $9 billion for Guyana. Mexico, ranked 98th at 1.5 per cent, is a $2.2 trillion economy, so its slower rate still adds more output than most of the top fifteen. Rate and contribution diverge sharply.

Base effects and 2025 comparisons

Several high ranks rest on small or recovering bases. Sudan ranks eighth at 7.0 per cent for 2026 after zero growth in 2025, and is projected at 15.0 per cent in 2027, a rebound profile rather than a steady expansion. Kyrgyzstan slows from 11.1 per cent in 2025 to 9.0 per cent in 2026, so its rank reflects a deceleration. Guyana itself eases from 19.3 per cent in 2025 to 22.3 per cent, then 16.8 per cent in 2027 and 9.2 per cent in 2028.

World growth is put at 3.1 per cent for 2026, 3.4 per cent for 2027 and 3.3 per cent for 2028, with world inflation at 4.7 per cent in 2026. Nominal figures are not adjusted for that inflation, and the 100 listed economies exclude those below $20 billion. A rank of 1 or 100 describes position within this sample, not economic weight.

Frequently asked questions

Which country has the highest GDP growth forecast for 2026?

Guyana ranks first among economies above $20 billion, with real GDP growth of 22.3 percent forecast for 2026, up from 19.3 percent in 2025. Its economy is projected at $40 billion in 2026. Kyrgyzstan is second at 9 percent, followed by Vietnam at 8.4 percent, Uzbekistan at 7.8 percent and Tajikistan at 7.3 percent. The top of the table is dominated by small, commodity-linked and transition economies, where base effects and new production capacity lift headline rates well above the 3.1 percent world average for 2026.

What is the IMF October 2026 forecast for world GDP growth?

The October 2026 vintage puts world growth at 3.1 percent in 2026, 3.4 percent in 2027 and 3.3 percent in 2028. World inflation for 2026 is 4.7 percent. The forecasts cover 100 economies above $20 billion in GDP. Within that set, 2026 outcomes range from 22.3 percent in Guyana to 1.5 percent in the Netherlands and Moldova. The 2026 figure sits below the 2027 peak, indicating a modest acceleration rather than a broad slowdown across the projection horizon.

Which large economies appear in the IMF 2026 growth top 15?

India is the only trillion-scale economy in the top 15, with 7 percent growth in 2026 and GDP of $4.1 trillion, after 7.8 percent in 2025. Vietnam, at $542 billion, records 8.4 percent. The remaining entries are smaller: Uzbekistan at $178 billion and 7.8 percent, Côte d'Ivoire at $110 billion and 6 percent, Tanzania at $96 billion and 6 percent, and Uganda at $72 billion and 6.2 percent. Ten of the 15 economies have 2026 GDP below $50 billion, so the ranking is weighted towards small, fast-growing markets.

Which economies have the lowest 2026 growth forecasts?

Among the 100 economies listed, the Netherlands ranks 100th with 1.5 percent growth in 2026, on GDP of $1.4 trillion, down from 1.6 percent in 2025. Moldova also records 1.5 percent, with GDP of $22 billion. Mexico is 98th at 1.5 percent, following 0.5 percent in 2025, on GDP of $2.2 trillion. Finland is 97th at 1.7 percent and Azerbaijan 96th at 1.7 percent. All five sit below the 3.1 percent world average for 2026, with the two largest, the Netherlands and Mexico, together accounting for roughly $3.6 trillion in output.

How do 2026 forecasts compare with 2025 outcomes in the top 15?

Most top-15 economies decelerate in 2026 relative to 2025. Kyrgyzstan falls from 11.1 percent to 9 percent, Vietnam rises from 8 to 8.4 percent, and Tajikistan drops from 8.4 to 7.3 percent. Sudan moves from zero growth in 2025 to 7 percent in 2026, the largest single-year swing in the group. Guinea edges up from 6.9 to 7.2 percent, while India eases from 7.8 to 7 percent. Guyana is the main exception, accelerating from 19.3 to 22.3 percent, with 2026 GDP of $40 billion.
